Mapping of Solar Electrification

Ethiopia
GIZ, 2020 - 2022

In close cooperation with the Ethiopian Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy, the GIZ Energizing Development program (EnDev) supports access to modern energy services in the country. As solar electrification of off-grid public institutions such as schools and health centers is one of the program’s core activities, numerous electrification initiatives have emerged. The large number of activities and involved parties makes it necessary to provide a comprehensive overview over existing initiatives and installations but also to coordinate future opportunities and planning.

GFA B.I.S. Services

GFA B.I.S. was commissioned by GFA Consulting Group to develop a user-friendly digital
mapping system that records electrification initiatives in Ethiopia. The collected data is regularly uploaded into a national database and accessible via DACOTA’s map view on a public website. Users can filter or select specific solar electrification initiatives and installation, collect further information on selected activities and display them on an interactive map. In addition, the key information of the mapping and database is compiled to a report that can be shared as PDF-document with any interested party. The DACOTA based mapping system enables the Ministry to visualize electrification progress and make information accessible for policy makers, researchers and initiatives that coordinate future activities.
